Hi everyone! Let me introduce myself now, because hopefully the rest of the site will have as little to do with me and as much to do with our other students as possible. I’m Isabel Hope, a 17-year-old girl from Tuscaloosa, AL. I love politics, social change, writing, television, and cats. I would say I have been politically involved since 2015, but I have also been going to protests since I was 6, so that may have helped. Anyway, enough about me. Let’s spill the sweet tea on Yellowhammer Youth.
Yellowhammer Youth is a digital space for young people in every area of Alabama to share their voices and be heard through opinion pieces. Our staff writers come from different political beliefs and backgrounds, but we are all pretty sick of the youth perspective not being considered in our state. We have a section on the “Contact” page where students from every part of Alabama can submit an op-ed to the site or apply to be on our team. We want to hear from everyone.
You’ve probably seen Alabama in the news a lot recently. Maybe it was about our state legislature passing the strictest abortion ban in the country? Maybe it was because of our baller (pun intended) college football team? Maybe you thought we dropped off the face of the earth voluntarily because “who even lives in Alabama?” Well, we do. Our voices have not been heard in these conversations yet, but we are here and we are here to stay. Alabama youth have something to say, and since this site is entirely run by students, it looks like it’s our chance to make some noise.
Welcome to Yellowhammer Youth.
